چکیده

Industrial exposure to gases and fumes may produce a wide variety of respiratory damage including tracheobronchial inflammation and parenchymal damage.' Tracheobronchial inflammation is reported, particularly after exposure to chlorine, ammonia, and sulphur dioxide. Interstitial pneumonitis has been associated with the inhalation of oxides of nitrogen,2 cadmium,3 manganese,4 mercury,5 and resins containing trimellitic anhydride.6 We report a patient who developed both reversible airways obstruction and steroid responsive interstitial pneumonitis after accidental exposure to glacial acetic acid.

Delayed-onset bronchiolitis obliterans with organising pneumonia associated with massive acetic acid steam inhalation.

A 34-year-old worker had massive exposure to acetic acid steam from an explosion in a chemical factory. At the emergency department respiratory distress, hoarseness and swelling of the oropharyngeal mucosa were noted. The chest radiograph showed bilateral infiltration (fig 1). After being diagnosed with inhalation injury and chemical pneumonitis, he was prophylactically intubated and given pare...

Farming and the prevalence of non-reversible airways obstruction: results from a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION Occupational exposure to noxious dusts, gases, and fumes most likely contributes to obstructive lung disease. We studied whether self-reported farming work is associated with non-reversible airways obstruction. METHODS Following the burden of obstructive lung disease (BOLD) study protocol, we surveyed a gender-stratified population-based sample of 2,200 adults aged 40 years and o...

Comparison of the prevalence of reversible airways obstruction in rural and urban Zimbabwean children.

The prevalence of reversible airways obstruction has been assessed in children in three areas in Zimbabwe--northern Harare (high socioeconomic class urban children), southern Harare (low socio-economic class urban children), and Wedza Communal Land (rural children from peasant families). Peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured before and after six minutes' free running in 2055 Zimbabwean primar...
